The Water Bowl Challenge That Didn't Quite Go To Plan

Not everything that creates wonderful family memories has to cost money.

Sometimes all you need is:

💦 A few bowls of water.

😂 A group of children.

☀️ A warm summer's day.

And a willingness to embrace a little bit of chaos.

That was certainly the case when we decided to try the Water Bowl Challenge.

The idea sounded simple enough.

We lined six children up in a row, each wearing a blindfold and holding a bowl of water.

The plan was for the person at the front of the line to throw their water backwards over their head, then run to the back of the line with their empty bowl while everyone else moved forward.

Simple.

Well...

That was the theory!

As with most things involving children, it didn't quite go to plan.

There was water everywhere.

Children laughing so hard they could barely stand up.

Some bowls completely missed the person behind them.

Others somehow managed to soak everyone at once.

And by the end, nobody really cared who had won.

The fun wasn't in getting it right.

It was in laughing together.

Why Activities Like This Matter

Children rarely remember the expensive days out.

They remember the unexpected moments.

The games that made everyone laugh.

The silly memories that become family stories for years to come.

Activities like this also encourage:

• teamwork

• communication

• confidence

• resilience when things don't go to plan

And perhaps most importantly...

They remind us that spending time together doesn't have to be complicated.

What You'll Need

• Six bowls or plastic containers

• Water

• Blindfolds (optional)

• A warm day

• A garden... and maybe a towel or two!

Our Tip

Don't worry about following the rules perfectly.

If the game changes halfway through...

If everyone ends up soaked...

If the children invent new rules...

Go with it.

Sometimes the best memories are made when the original plan disappears completely.

💛

Bringing It All Together

Parenting isn't always about creating perfect moments.

Sometimes it's simply about creating happy ones.

And if those moments involve lots of laughter, a few soggy T-shirts and children asking to play it all over again...

I'd call that a pretty successful afternoon.

Jacquie Eaton - Paint the Moon

Hi, I'm Jacquie. I'm a hypnotherapist, coach and the creator of Paint The Moon. For over 18 years I've worked with children, teenagers and adults, helping people understand busy minds, overwhelming emotions and the everyday challenges that can come with thinking differently. Over the years, I've realised that behaviour often makes much more sense once you understand what's happening underneath it. That's why I created Paint The Moon. Not to label children. Not to tell parents they're getting it wrong. But to help make sense of the moments that leave so many families asking: "Why did they react like that?" "Why do they become so fixated?" "Why can't they just switch off?" Through articles, hypnosis recordings and practical resources, my aim is to help parents understand what's happening beneath the behaviour, so home can feel calmer, communication becomes easier and children feel truly understood. Because when we understand the brain, we begin to respond differently. And sometimes, that changes everything.
